Balkh University
Balkh University is located in Mazari Sharif, capital of Balkh province, in northern Afghanistan. Established in 1986, the university in 2008 had about 5500 students and is the third largest in Afghanistan after Kabul University and Nangarhar University. Faculties include medicine, engineering, economics, journalism, literature, law and science.
The United States and Germany, which leads ISAF in Balkh, announced in January 2009 an expansion of Balkh University at a cost of more than 300 million dollars.
